I can just tell where the relationship between star-struck Americans and President-elect Obama is heading after his first press conference. Many bought the hype, admired the aura and swooned over his “de Bergerac-tic” words and now truth is setting in. He
“uhh-ed” and “ahh-ed” his way through it and skedaddled as soon as he could. It reminds me of the joke where the guy married the beautiful opera singer. Once he got her home, she took out her false teeth, took off her wig, and washed off the make-up. With the façade removed, things got so bad that he could only say, “Sing, woman, sing.”
With the Greek columns packed away, the teleprompter retired, and the poetic moments ebbing, the mist of illusion fades and stone hard reality arrives. I know it’s early; I know I’m to give him a chance, but I just have this hunch that things are not going to be so hunky-dory in Obama Land for long. The honeymoon may be over before the consummation.
